The erected fire crackled as Sheena reclined in the grass beside it. She shifted her gaze from the starry night sky above to Daisuke.
He sat alone in front of the fire, staring at the burning embers at the bottom of it. The rest of his team had gone to sleep well before this time, but Daisuke couldn't; he was troubled. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught Sheena's gaze and returned it. "Yes?" he questioned.
"Nothing. Just lookin' around," replied Sheena with a tone of innocence. She averted her eyes to another section of the sky.
Daisuke mumbled a reply and returned to his solemn position by the fire. Sheena took quick note of his composure and was worried.
"Hey Dai, you alright? You look sorta melancholy"
His head shot up. "Who, me? Yeah, I'm fine..." Daisuke's voice dropped off, and his forced smile broke down quickly. He sat, still and silent.
Sheena's worry grew and she pressed further into the matter, despite her manners. "You don't sound too fine to me."
A sigh escaped from Daisuke's lips, and turned his head away from Sheena.
"What's wrong? Tell me."
"It's nothing...You wouldn't understand." He stood up, attempting to give the impression that he didn't want to talk.
"Wouldn't understand? Daisuke, I killed a quarter of my village's population by accident. I think I've been there."
Sheena's playful tone caused Daisuke to crack a smile from his pursed lips. He bit the lower, trying to conceal it. He wanted to feel bad. He felt terrible for the pain he caused to Makoto, regardless of his lack of choice. Turning his head back towards Sheena, realizing she was awaiting a reply, Daisuke opened up. "It's my brother."
"Ohhhh, family trouble?"
Daisuke chuckled at the naivety of her question. "You could say that."
Sheena sat up, bracing her self with her hands to the ground behind her, elbows locked. She wanted to show that she was listening, yet she couldn't find the exact way to portray this.
"I'm guessing you want to know more about it?" Daisuke was nervous of her answer.
"If you wanna talk about it, sure." She smiled and brought her knees to her chest, hugging them with her arms.
She can't know...NO ONE SHOULD KNOW! Daisuke clenched his teeth and fist as the memories and anger coursed uncontrollably through his blood.
"Hey, if it's a touchy subject, you don't have to tell me." Sheena's head fell back, and her eyes focused on the stars once more. "But maybe," she continued to speak without looking at him, "you should do something you enjoy to take your mind off it."
The thought blew through Daisuke's mind like a breeze, and he was calm once more. "You're right, Sheena. That's an excellent idea." He walked in Sheena's direction, taking a seat beside her in the grass. His fingers caressed the moonlit blades, and his nails dug in the earth.
Man, I have some great ideas sometimes. Her hubris began to seep through, but she quickly repressed it. Taking a loose lock of hair over her face and pushing it behind her ear, she brought her attention upon Daisuke. "So what do you like to do for fun?"
He sifted through his memories, and looked for the activity he had the most fun with. After a few seconds, he found it. "Fighting. Proving my strength. That's what I love to do."
Sheena's laugh was childish in nature, though she agreed entirely with him. "Well I hope you aren't planning to beat me up."
Daisuke smiled, "Not unless I have to."
Sheena punched him jokingly in the shoulder and the two shared a laugh. When the moment settled, an idea wormed its way into Sheena's head. "What do you say we have a sparring session tomorrow? No holds barred, just you and me."
He looked from the stars, to the bright moon, finally stopping on Sheena's amber eyes. "I'd like that. At the crack of dawn, we begin."
"You got it. Just make sure medic over there's standing by."
"Yeah, yeah. We'll see if you can keep up that attitude." He grazed the bottom of her chin with his index finger horizontally in a demeaning fashion.
Sheena slapped his hand away and punched him in the shoulder once again, smirking all while. "Now get to bed, you need your rest."
Daisuke nodded compliantly and stood up. "Goodnight Sheena." He walked over to a tent constructed earlier in the night.
"Goodnight Dai-dai." She smiled and dropped to her back. She rolled over to her side, resting her head on her arm, looking for a comfortable position to sleep in.
This should be fun. And come to think of it, I've never seen any of Sheena's jutsu! I'm already excited...damn, she punches hard. Daisuke rubbed his shoulder as he entered the tent.
