Benkei Hyūga (日向弁慶, Hyūga Benkei) is a member of the main family of the prestigious Hyūga clan. He fled his clan in horror after the slaughter of a branch family member to protect him. He also is the rival and oldest friend of fellow Dōjutsu wielder Yoshitsune Uchiha. This eventually caused him to want to join Yoshitsune's village Gingagakure.
Born as a member of the main branch of the prodigal Hyūga clan, Benkei lived a privilaged childhood. He was born with a very powerful Byakugan, causing him to learn the abilities of his clan quickly. He was eventually put into the academy and later landed a position on the genin team led by Kazesō, and teamed with Yoshitsune Uchiha and an unknown female. Like his teammate, he was promoted to chūnin. During a kidnap attempt to take his eyes by an unknown invader, a Hyūga head killed a branch family member and used an advanced Body Replacement Technique to replace Benkei with the dead body. Benkei was horrified by this action, and promptly fled his clan and village to find his own path. Many years later, he would discover Yoshitsune's village of Gingagakure and joined it to work alongside his old friend.
Benkei is often described as having "wild dark hair' due to the fact his sticks out in many spikes and its black color. He also has very fair skin and possesses the renowned Byakugan. When he activates his Byakugan the arteries and veins around his eyes protrude more prominently due to stimulation. He wears a white short shirt kimono with a mesh shirt visible beneath it. He was black pants and wears standard black shinobi sandals.
Benkei is very serious due to the death of the branch family member. If it weren't for this he would be more happy-go-lucky. Unlike Sakin he can calm down a bit and enjoy what is going on around him. He does this best while in a meadow according to himself. When it comes to Yoshitsune he continues a seemingly endless friendly rivalry which is returned.
Benkei was renowned as a prodigy of the Hyūga clan during his time at the academy due to his versatile skill in the classes, easily being known as the best user of taijutsu in his class. Benkei and Yoshitsune were the only two of their class hailed as "natural geniuses." He also became a Medic-nin, mostly to help his fellow members of the Gingagakure ANBU.
Like all Hyūga, Benkei possesses the famed eyes which grants him x-ray vision, nearly 360° vision, and the ability to see chakra networks, the Byakugan. The only blind spot is on the upper thoracic vertebrae. Due to this Benkei takes precaution in battle to make sure that information does not slip and protect it in case the enemy is aware of it. Though the Byakugan naturally has an immediate 50 metre field of vision when activated, Benkei increases his skill of this to being able to see over 1000 meters. It is noted that the Byakugan he possesses is very powerful compared to others, some saying his is even stronger than the Byakugan of the great Neji Hyūga. Benkei can also see Tenketsu.
Benkei is known as a master of the Gentle Fist, which focuses upon damaging the internal body. He has shown the ability of blocking many chakra points and damaging vital organs such as the lungs. Benkei tries to avoid damaging the opponent's heart as he does not enjoy senseless killing. He has many of the Eight Trigram techniques down which cause him to be feared when angered.
- Benkei, and Yoshitsune for that matter, gain their names from the Japanese stories surrounding the legendary figure Yoshitsune such as the story Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura.
- Benkei is based upon one of my first Naruto characters from when I first saw it. Ben Hyūga was that original character who was in turn based upon my then favorite character Neji Hyūga. Ben, obviously my name, was from the fact I didn't give Japanese names then because I didn't understand them.
- (To Yoshitsune) "I'm about to show you that the Byakugan can be just as powerful, just as useful, and just as amazing as the Sharingan."
- "Though I'm not pround of the actions caused by some of them, I am a proud Hyūga."
