Ice Release (氷遁, Hyōton, Viz: Ice Style) is the advanced nature kekkei genkai of the Yuki clan, and allows the users to combine wind and water-based chakra to create and manipulate ice, forming it into various structures. When the user releases their chakra, the surrounding vicinity becomes cold enough to cause snow to fall. The ice created is largely immune to fire-based attacks, only melting slightly when coming into contact with flames.

Several of the Yukigakure ninja also have the ability to use Hyoton techniques. However, this was not the product of a similar kekkai genkai, as demonstrated by Kakashi's ability to replicate one of these jutsu with his Sharingan. In addition, users of the Kekkei Genkai can create ice from thin air as was demonstrated by Haku, yet some users were unable to create their own ice and were bound to the manipulation of preexisting ice. The Yukigakure ninja used hand seals in their ice manipulation abilities. These ice release or Hyoton techniques commonly used the Hand Seal: Dog.

It is also a chakra nature used when one is the host of the Three-Tailed Giant Turtle, though the turtle's version seems to be less effective than the Kekkai Genkai, only allowing creation of mist as far as ice creation goes. However, unlike the kekkai genkai it makes the user's chakra appear cold and icy.

Another known use of this release is through the Korino clan's kekkei genkai. Through this bloodline, they can manipulate their water nature with unnaturally cold temperatures stored in their chakra. This form of ice is strong enough to rival even a diamond in durability.
