Kotodama (言霊, Literally meaning: Word Soul") is a unique form of chakra moulding used to perform Fūhadō. The exact amount of chakra necessary to perform a technique is manipulated through word patterns or incarnations. There are different sequences of incarnation for every technique, requiring memorisation and focus.

Kotodama is quite different from hand seal. When using hand seals, different patterns and sequences of hand sign would lead to a unique distinct technique. Kotodama on the other hand, uses specific words to symbolize what the user wishes to do. For example the word flames or heat refers to the creation of fire, while long, or vast refers to long distance. By combining several words into one sentence: The spheres of flames, rain upon the vast terrain., meaning scattered fireballs the can attack over long distances. The user may use synonyms of the words to create these combinations. This means a large vocabulary is required to be a skilled user of the Kotodama.
