This technique allows the user to invoke the power of a rapidly oscillating current of lightning chakra that expands roughly one meter from the user's hand. The oscillations of this technique are quick enough that it appears as if an electric current is simply extended from the user's hand. By swinging this current of lightning, which is noticeably darker in coloration than most lighting techniques, the user is able to cut through most materials without inhibition. Slashes made through this technique are quite jagged, easily increasing the damage potential of this technique when it is used on living targets. It is also for this reason that this technique is used with care around allies.

While this technique usually requires hand seals Shirokaze's apparent mastery has allowed him to bypass their usage on more than one occasion. Furthermore, he has been observed using this technique as a form of Chakra Flow, increasing his sword's cutting potential as well as granting his bland with unique abilities. One of these additional abilities allowed Shirokaze to cause an electrical surge to gather strike the blade enhanced by this technique, notably destroying a sword of Fuyutama craftsmanship.

Shirokaze invented this technique in order to possess a original technique of his own, after he was unable to initially master his father's technique Youshun. Even after eventually learning Youshun, Shirokaze still appears to like this technique more, despite having it occasionally fall out of usage.

While this technique does utilize lightning of a darkened coloration, it should be noted that Lightning Release: Pitch Black Thunder Technique predates the appearance of Black Lightning in the Naruto manga.
