Sarugami (猿神, Sarugami) is a benevolent deity of gargantuan size. Often called Lord Sarugami, he is the wise Great Monkey Sage (大猿仙人, "Ōsaru Sennin") and supreme ruler of Monkey Island. Sarugami's age is unknown but many attribute his birth to predate the history of shinobi. He is famed for his highly accurate prophecies and shows loyalty to Yamazaru.
Background[]
As the leader of Monkey Island (猿島 "Sarushima"), Sarugami is a highly respected individual, sage and wise person. His fame and power are known throughout. There are many tales of the monkey's abilities and the battles he has taken part in, especially because many of them resulted in the destruction of mountains and creation of rivers and small lakes.
He met Yamazaru when the man was born, having allowed both his father and mother to serve as priests in his holy temple in Suhenmori Jungle (巣妙の森, "Den of Bizarre Trees Jungle", VIZ; "Jungle of Bizarre Nests Forest") on Monkey Island.
Sarugami is actually a spirit. He is in physical form in the Impure World, however.
Personality[]
He has a pleasant attribute and personality, favoring children and playful antics. He despises those who abuse the innocent and act out of presumptuousness or evil. Sarugami, although being lighthearted and kind, can become serious at a moment's notice, scolding even Yamazaru whom he respects dearly. Apparently, the sage has a long-lasting feud with the Four Tails Beast, Son Gokū. Likely because Son Gokū, who once resided on Monkey Island, challenged Sarugami's authority.
Abilities[]
Sarugami is immensely powerful—he is a master sage and many believe him to be immortal. His chakra is directly comparable to that of a Tailed Beast and despite his size—which competes amongst the largest of them all—he is undoubtedly quick on his feet. Because of the many years he has lived, the monkey sage is wise beyond that of human understanding; he comprehends the body, chakra and energies like no other. He also has the unique ability of being able to tell the future after looking into a sacred lake on Monkey Island. Sarugami can transform into a plethora of different objects, people or naturally occurring features of a landscape such as mountains. With that transformation ability, the sage can cause himself to shrink down to smaller, humanoid sizes or grow even larger than what he already is.
Of all his abilities, quite possibly his most extraordinary is that of purification and healing; Sarugami can prolong the life of a person or bring back those on the brink of death.
Sarugami is said to be matched in power with the Four Tails, capable of holding its own agaisnt the beast in a bout. History has it that he took a bjūdama at point blank range and survived thanks to his unimaginable durability and life force.
