The Kotaba Clan (こたば一族, Kotaba Ichizoku) is a powerful clan from Konohagakure, that during its prime, was allied with the royal Hyūga Clan. At the age of 6-8, all members are to learn the Spirit Technique kekkei genkai, which enables the user to manipulate their spirit, commonly known as spirit chakra.

Welcoming[]
The Kotaba Clan was successfully established four weeks after Hiruzen Sarutobi was elected as the 2nd Hokage. At the beginning of their time, the Kotaba's were looked down upon, especially by the Nara Clan, for presently unknown reasons. They were, however, welcomed eventually when they showed their true colors. The Kotaba clan also showed particular interest in the Hyūga Clan.
Hyūga Alliance[]
A few years after their welcoming, Surā Kotaba spotted Hizashi Hyūga unconscious, in the arms of a mysterious masked man, being carried into the forest. Surā followed him silently and watched as the masked man pulled out a kunai and stabbed it into the body. Wide eyed, Surā leaped out of the shadows, noticing two things at once. One, the body was a substitution jutsu, and two, that Hizashi was leaping towards the masked man also. The two nodded, a new found respect born, and they both attacked the man. A full on battle engaged, and part way through, the masked man escaped. The two shinobi then formed an alliance between the Kotaba Clan and the Hyūga Clan.
Kotaba Massacre[]
The night Ayame Kotaba was chosen as the third leader, disaster struck. When the clan members were asleep, the newly assigned Akatsuki member, Ogama Sastujin, slaughtered the clan for pure fun. By the time the members woke up, it was already too late and the only known survivor was the 10 year old Zade Kotaba.
