- Other Names: Tanigakure (literally, Village Hidden in a Valley)
Tanigakure (木ノ葉隠れの里, Tanigakure no Sato, lit meaning=Village Hidden Among a Valley, also known as "Village Hidden in a Valley" or "Hidden Valley Village") is one of the villages with a Kage as its leader, known as the Tanikage.
Although Tanigakure, much like the country in which it resides, has been warlike and, it remains one of the most powerful villages in existence, with an overall ninja population much greater than that of most other villages, and therefore has great military power and influence. It was founded by Mashin, the founder of Kagekenin, at an unknown period of time. It is speculated that he formed the Land of Darkness and Tanigakure around the time that Madara Uchiha and the First Hokage formed Konohagakure. It can be compared to Kagegakure, in that the ninja that are suppose to live there are unnaturally strong.
The village was formed around the time Madara and the First Hokage built Konoha. Mashin, a great Sage, helped the village become the ruler of the Land of Darkness. At some point after Mashin founded the Kagekenin, Tanigakure became one of Kagekenin's bases and greatest financial supporters.
