The Twelve Guardian Ninja (守護忍十二士, Shugonin Jūnishi) is an organization of twelve elite warriors who had left their village and had pledged their lives to protect the Fire Daimyo. The current generation came into being when the Fourth great Shinobi World War was declared. Despite initially having a minor role during the earlier parts of the Naruto - Eigoukaiki storyline, starting from Part 7 of the Naruto - Eigoukaiki canon they have become a primary anti-protangonist, playing a more important role. The members are identified by the "Fire" kanji (火) marked loincloths they wear.
10 Years Before
A group which was formed before the start of the story, the Twelve Guardian Ninja have for a long time protected the Daimyo. All the original members are dead, but the group continues to operate. About ten years before the start of the series, half of the original members began to believe that only the Daimyo should lead the Land of Fire. To that end they planned a coup d'etat against the Hokage, and planned to later conquer the rest of the countries. Kazuma tried to remove the Daimyo to replace him with a puppet Daimyo, as the current Daimyo didn't support the revolt, but he was stopped by Asuma before he could do so. The different ideals split the group in two, which led to a fight between them that only Asuma Sarutobi, Kazuma, and Chiriku survived. It would seem that, sometime before the group was disbanded, some underground organization put a bounty on most of the members' heads.
Twelve Guardian Ninja arc (Anime only)
In the anime, Kazuma tried once again to destroy the Hokage and Konoha by resurrecting the four fallen loyal guardians. However, Asuma was able to stop and kill him. Chiriku was killed soon afterwards by members of Akatsuki, in order to collect the bounty on his head. Once they had collected the 30 million ryō they were confronted by Asuma. After a prolonged battle, Asuma was killed too, but they were unable to cash-in on his 35 million bounty after Asuma's reinforcements arrived.
Fourth Great Shinobi World War
During the Fourth Great Shinobi World War, the Twelve Guardian Ninja fought bravely to put a stop to Madara Uchiha and the Akatsuki's plans. Most of the shinobi died in the war, but they were buried with honour. As the war was coming to an end, the Guardians staged one more attack, completely annihilating the few Akatsuki members left. Once the war was finished, the Land of Fire celebrated the Guardian Ninja's hard work, going as far as to build a statue of the surviving members. But as the world became at peace again, the ninja began to quarrel over the one king Kazuma had talked about all those years ago. Eventually, they split into two factions. Three were loyal to the Fire Daimyo, while five were loyal to the Hokage. They had a major battle, now known as the Battle at the Temple of Bloody Fire, which the loyal faction to the Fire Daimyo coming out the victor. All the Hokage loyals surrendered, hoping to be brought back into the original group. They were happily brought in, and so the Twelve Ninja Guardians have become whole again.
